Letters to Alan

Dear Alan4 October 2026

Dear Alan, I wish there were some way you could read this. Not as a tribute written after you were gone, but simply as a letter from someone who has spent years discovering your work and wishing there were still more of it to find. You gave so much to acting, not only through film, but through theatre. That is why it feels so important that the stage performances which were filmed should, where possible, be made available for people to see. For those of us who never had the chance to watch you perform live, these recordings are the closest we could ever come. I can watch your films again and again and still notice something new: a pause, a look, the way you deliver a single line, the emotion sitting underneath what the character is actually saying. You had a remarkable ability to make people pay attention without ever seeming to demand it. That is what makes the thought of unseen stage recordings so difficult. They exist. Your performances are there. Your voice, your movements, your choices as an actor, preserved somewhere in an archive. And there are people all over the world who would treasure the opportunity to see them. I know theatre is meant to be experienced in a room, between an actor and an audience, and that part of its beauty is how temporary it is. But when a performance has already been filmed, releasing it does not take anything away from that original moment. It gives another audience the chance to experience a small part of it. I never met you. I never sat in one of those theatres. I never had the opportunity to tell you what your work meant to me. But your performances still matter to me enormously. They make me laugh, they move me, and they make me want to keep searching for everything you created. That is really what this petition means to me. It is not about wanting more because what you left behind was not enough. It is because what you left behind was so extraordinary that we want to understand more of it. If those stage recordings can be released, I hope they will be. Let us be the audience who arrived late. Let us sit in the back row, decades later and thousands of miles away. We will still be watching. And we will still be grateful. With enormous admiration and affection, A fan who wishes she could have seen you on stage
