Dear Alan, I am writing this to share something that has grown inside me over many years, even if I only fully understood it later. Looking back, your acting has always been a constant part of my life, even before I knew who you were and whose presence was leaving such a mark on me. I first saw you when I was about 9 years old in Die Hard. At that age, I didn't know your name or work, but Hans Gruber captured my attention in a way few characters ever had. There was an effortless brilliance, charm, and command in your performance that stayed with me long after. Years later, around the age of 14, I watched Sense and Sensibility. Once again, without fully connecting the dots, I found myself deeply moved. Your portrayal of Colonel Brandon carried a quiet warmth, an unspoken devotion and a tender strength that made it impossible not to fall for him. It was a completely different world from the one I had first seen you in, yet the emotional resonance was just as powerful. It wasn't until 2024, during a rewatch of the Harry Potter series, that everything finally came together. Watching your portrayal of Severus Snape with all his deep emotion, hidden sadness and care made me view him in a whole new light. Even though I was scared of and disliked the character as a kid, I realized that the person who had moved me all these years was you. I finally recognized that I had fallen deeply for your craft, your voice and the profound nuance you brought to every role you touched, even down to the smallest detail. Realizing all of this now hurts deeply because I know you are no longer in this world. Sometimes, remembering that a decade has already passed since you left us brings me to tears and it breaks my heart that I came to this realization too late. Thank you for giving so much of yourself to your art. Your work has a rare, timeless quality that continues to touch hearts across generations, and for the way your performances have shaped my own appreciation for storytelling, I will always be deeply grateful. With warmth and admiration.
